Trends in Music

Image
Current trends: Every decade represents a shift in the music industry, from the way we’re able to listen to music to the evolving genre of sounds. Music industry trends like boomboxes, cassette tapes, and the New Wave and pop hits mark the ‘80’s era, while CDs and Apple iTunes playing boy and girl band phenomenons and catchy one-hit wonders were part of the trend of the ‘90s and into the early 2000s.  At the moment, songs are more based around love and relationships or events that are taking place such as Black Lives Matter. This means that majority of the music videos at the moment are being created with strong narratives and storylines as all the song lyrics have deeper meanings behind them. The four most watched music videos include: Despacito, Sorry, Uptown Funk and Sugar. 3 of these four music videos are all basing their storyline or music videos around girls. All of the songs are performed by men, which links to men sexualising girls in their music videos as they try an...

Abstract Music video RipTide by Vance Joy  Riptide is classified as an abstract music video, meaning there is no distinctive storyline or narrative that is being followed. The music video is just following the lyrics for example each lyric is being interpreted onto the screen it is deliberate way such as a picture of a female looking scared at the dentist relates to the opening line “I was scared of dentists in the dark”.  Throughout the large majority of the music video there are many transitions for example when the line discussing the riptide sung a visual representation of a riptide is presented. this causes the video to appear with a more simplistic view essentially helping the audience to further engage. with specific images being used for each word, the audience can see this image comfortably fit in this relates to Steve Neale’s genre theory as he discusses the repetition within a genre.  The video frequently references the western thriller genres but mostly notice...

Branding

Image
Branding and its importance: Branding is very important when an artist is trying to become successful in the music industry. In order to accomplish this, you will need to not only have a clear image as an artist, but a plan in place to maintain the integrity of that image. This is the primary reason why having a solid brand as a musical artist is such an effective way to get your music noticed. Branding is more about connecting with your fans in a unique way than it is about slogans and logos. Social media allows artists to reach out to consumers in a more authentic, engaging manner, eliciting strong emotional reactions that will ensure fan loyalty. From a large scale to small, cohesive branding is important for all artists. Good branding reveals the artist’s style, interests, personality and aligns with their music, beliefs, and overall message. Whether its album covers, profile photos, website or merchandise, it’s important that artists establish a recognisable, interesting image...

Target Setting: What planning do you need to do  My group and I need to start to plan who is going to be in our music video. We need an artist and many side characters to help build the storyline. We also need to distinguish what are song is going to be as we have two options we are currently debating between. Both are of the pop genre.  We are likely to use many props and different costumes to help show the storyline across a few days, as our music video is based around a flashback.  Group roles  Director - Abi + Maddie  Social media page - Abi  Digipak - Maddie  Film - Abi  Editing of music video - Maddie  Reflection: How did the research go and what did I learn: I found a lot of new information with my research, such as all the different stereotypes and conventions that happen in each genre. Social Media

Image
What is the purpose of an artist social media page? Why are they used? Social media platforms are the new way for artists to develop and connect with their fanbases. Over the years, we have seen artists utilise platforms like Twitter, Instagram, TikTok Youtube, and Facebook to generate a greater audience.  Social media continues to give musicians the opportunities they previously could only have through record companies. The various social media platforms give artists the ability to reach a wider audience than ever before. Since so many people use these platforms, bands, solo artists, and musicians can reach these potential fans if they use social media to their advantage. Social Media is a place where artists can promote their new musical products such as an upcoming tour or new album, this is so they can have a close interaction between their fans, making announcements more personal. They can use social media such as instagram to promote not just their own products but other cele...

What is a digipak   A digipak is the same form and size of a standard CD case, however it is made from environmentally friendly cardboard. The difference with a digipak is that the CD wallet has a plastic tray which the disc snaps into - sturdier product. The history of the digipak starts in 1974. A Digipak consists of a insert, spine and front, the insert being a booklet containing information about the Artist, pages devoted to pictures of the Artist, and sometimes the lyrics of songs and different information to do with the record label and producers. There are many different types of digipak's here are two: 4 panel Digipak - the most common panel. CD digipaks with 4 panels have a this many panels for customer colour printing. Genre as a key concept

Image
Music Genres:  There are multiple types of different music genres ranging from pop - country all containing different conventions and codes, however they do have similarities between each other. There is over 53 different music genres, some are very uncommon music, such as folk. The genres that I have focused my research towards include: Pop, RnB, Rock and electric dance music, this gives me a wide range of different music videos as some of the genres contain music that can switch between many different genres.  Genre is very important in music videos as they decide what the music video will be about whether it will follow a storyline and narrative or if it will be based upon a performance, different types of music videos are more common in different genres for example, narrative storylines are very popular in Pop Music as majority of the songs are based around love or heartbreak so the storyline is easier to come up with.  Genre as a key concept: Steve Neale states that ...
