Different music videos comparison
Abstract Music video
RipTide by Vance Joy
- Riptide is classified as an abstract music video, meaning there is no distinctive storyline or narrative that is being followed. The music video is just following the lyrics for example each lyric is being interpreted onto the screen it is deliberate way such as a picture of a female looking scared at the dentist relates to the opening line “I was scared of dentists in the dark”.
- Throughout the large majority of the music video there are many transitions for example when the line discussing the riptide sung a visual representation of a riptide is presented. this causes the video to appear with a more simplistic view essentially helping the audience to further engage. with specific images being used for each word, the audience can see this image comfortably fit in this relates to Steve Neale’s genre theory as he discusses the repetition within a genre.
- The video frequently references the western thriller genres but mostly noticeable he uses horror genre iconography e.g females repeatedly dragged off screen by unseen forces this again relates to Steve Neal’s genre theory about repetition.
- The key features of an abstract music video is to keep the audience entertained and make them constantly look at what or who is on the screen it should deliver an element of surprise and even sometimes shocked the audience they usually unrealistic and abstract taking a completely different approach to the song it helps the video overall look like a unique piece of art
- I think this is the most engaging style of music video as it makes the audience be more engaged into the sequence as there's not a storyline to follow so there's no way that they can guess what will happen it keeps them more intrigued.
Performance Music Video
I have nothing by Whitney Houston
- A performance-based music video is when the band or artist is just performing their chosen song, these are normally clips from performances that have been developed into a music video. they often contain closeup shorts and a stereotypically filmed on the stage or at a concert. this is effective as it helps advertise them show off a simple performance; by using this music video the viewers can solely focus on the artist themselves rather than what is in the music video.
- An example of a performance-based music video is I have nothing by Whitney Houston which is ultimately based upon clips from “The Bodyguard”. The video focuses on Whitney Houston's performance and her being illustrated as a beautiful and elegant artist the use of the performance-based video is important as it helps showcase the beauty of the song and lyrics to the viewer. It gives you an inside look of the film, this simple video is still affected as viewers still embrace Whitney as an artist and helps to express her personality.
- The performance video is relevant as it helps illustrate the emotion in the song since we can see this is an emotional song. it helps give a preview of what the film and Whitney will be like in the film of “the bodyguard”
- Although this type of music video has advantages, it is the least engaging music video type as there is no narrative or unusual images on the screen to grab the viewers’ attention however this does make it easier for the viewer to follow the lyrics rather than the narrative.
Narrative Music Videos
High Hope by Kodaline
- A narrative based music video is made to tell a story about the song which is often used in the pop genre. often the song told in the music videos based on the lyrics containing the song itself and then is dramatized in the music video. the narrative based music videos is like a mini film that has a beginning middle and ends and some form of disruption within the middle. some narrative videos have a climax event during instrumental powerful parts of the song to help bring more emotion. An artist-based music videos the best way to illustrate the lyrical connotations of a song.
- An example of using a narrative based music video is High Hopes by Kodaline. The main narrative of the story is mainly focusing on how people fall in love and second chances. this story is about a woman who runs away from the man she's supposed to Marianne runs away with another man and starts a happier life with him. the story looks at their love story and how they fall in love however nearly end you can see there's a disruption in the new equilibrium as the ex-husband comes back and shoots them both with a gun the music video ends with the man being hospitalised and hugged by the women showing their love has conquered all. this is a good example to show how narrative based music views can really help the artists show their ideas and thoughts behind the lyrics of the song. it helps engage the viewers and audiences more as it can make the song more relatable innocence of people falling in love with the wrong people at first.
- The narrative is important for this as it shows there is always a second chance of would’ve love and it helps the viewers connect with the band on the song as most people have experienced the feeling of falling in love with someone.
- I think this does help engage the audience more with the music video as it makes them wonder what will happen to the characters, they have developed a connection with. The music video format is one that I am planning to use as the songs that my group and I are discussing all have emotions and a deeper meaning behind the song making coming up with a storyline a lot easier. the pros and cons of this decision include that when filming the music video, we can see what is relevant to the story and what will help make this narrative stronger. a disadvantage of using this format as our music video is that we must make sure that the audience have the right connexion with the right people by making each character stereotyped which is seen a lot within pop genres and narrative based music videos
