Editing Techniques
Some of the editing techniques that we are planning to use includes the following:
- Montage - A video montage is a series of images or shots that are edited together to create a sequence. These also help to convey larger information over a shorter period. Montages can also be helpful to showcase the passing time or to showcase story development, which relates to our music video, as it flashes back and fourth between the past and the present time, which is the friend trying to move on. By using a Montage, the storyline can follow a non-linear narrative structure which is when the story is not told in chronological order, which will help keep the audience engaged with the video, as the storyline will not be predictable. This was our main editing technique, as a lot of time and skill must go into it to help make sure that the narrative can be figured out easily and that the story is clear, and not too confusing for the audience to follow. We made sure that the storyline was easy to follow by asking other students to review our work and see if they could figure out what we are trying to show, as this is our main target audience. An example of this type of music video is Ed Sheeran - Photograph
- J and L cuts - An L-cut is when the audio from the preceding scene continues to play over the footage from the following scene. A J-cut is just the reverse of an L-cut. L-cuts are used throughout majority of music videos, as it is one continous audio clip that is being played, the visuals are the to match and represent the audio, not the other way around.
