Analysis of Music Video Genres

 Different Genre Analysis

Pop Genre:

Pop music is the genre of popular music that is majority all hits. A hit is a song that sells many copies and the latest hits are announced every week on the charts. To get on the charts the song must be single, which released through albums. Songs that become hits always share the same characteristics of other pop-music songs it is called a pop-music formula. The formula of a good pop song consist of a good rhythm, catchy melody and easy to remember and sing along too, these are classic characteristics and similarities across all pop songs. The chorus is repeated several time alongside two or more verses. Most pop songs are between two and five minutes long, lyrics are usually about problems with love and relationships.

Taylor Swift - Wildest Dreams

  • This video is an example of a narrative video. The story-line follows two actors on location, being filmed for a movie. These two actors play a couple who are in love and the music video sees the story of these two actors in love offset as well as onset. When the premiere for the film comes around, Taylor finds out that the man already had a partner so feels betrayed and leaves him. This video uses a high amount of lyric to graphic shots which highly suggest that this is a story in which she is telling from the future and we are seeing her memories as she says them.
  • In this music video we can see that Taylor Swift has kept her signature red lipstick, which is incredibly noticeable. Although everything apart from the lipstick has changed such as her hair colour which is originally blonde, but in the music video it is seen as brunette/black, this could be seen as her showing her rebellious side.
  • The song title 'Wildest Dreams', suggests that she has gone wild, also the background of some of the scenes show she is in a desert to suggest the idea that she is in the wild. Throughout the music video it looks like she is letting go out something like setting herself free. She is holding a yellow scarf with represent the idea of laughter and happiness. Therefore, she is conveying the idea to the audience that she is happy about herself and is living her dreams. The mid-shots used throughout the music vide is used cleverly as you (the audience) can see her emotions in her face but also where the videos set to attract a wider audience.
  • The second verse features plenty of the lyric to graphic matches that I mentioned earlier which just enforces the storytelling ideas. Especially when she says ''Nothing lasts forever'  as he walks away. This brief look into her imagination at this points braces the viewer for what is to come at the end. When she suddenly flips out, this is her actual character flipping out which is suggested by the reactions of those around her. The contrast from her real emotions to the emotions she must play a minute later is striking to the viewer until they link it with the line 'Our very last kiss'. After this line it becomes apparent that this is the reason for her heightened emotions. This is then followed by a varying amount of plane shots. The purpose of these shots is to emphasise how free they were when they had no restrictions in regards to what they can do. It shows them having fun although Taylor is seen wearing blue which may suggest an underlying sadness as she knows that it can never last.
  • The Mise en scene in this video shows that the video is portraying her wildest dreams and how she imagine it to look like, as she is basing it off of older movies, especially with the editing on top of the music video to make sure that there is a vintage feel.
  • The conventions that this music video is using is classic pop genre characteristics such as bright colours to help convey different meanings.
  • The conventions of a famous lifestyle is shown towards the beginning of the music video, to show how glamorous she is; having someone doing her makeup and hairstyles.
  • There is a typical male and female love story which is a stereotypical storyline for pop music videos genres. It relates to the 'American Dream' linking to what she is trying to recreate.
  • Furthermore the way Taylor has her leg up in one of the scenes could imply that this is her first kiss with her dream man. Which is the main focus of the music video.
  • Throughout the music video, the editing techniques make it to become more of a dream like setting, as Taylor Swift is getting everything she ever wanted. The warm tone lightings on her side suggests love whereas the lighting on the man is normally cold and rough suggest his intentions. The image seems to be distorted. The lighting is typical of a pop song as they are commonly bright, vibrant and filmed in day time.
  • Music videos are conveys although the dressings of the artists, therefore the lyrics match this to understand the story and create associations.
  • When the music begins again, it represents a final last hope. This is clarified by Taylor's attitude and posture when she leaves the car. She seems confident and happy until at the premiere until we see the guy's partner. She is very similar to Taylor with the same red lips and red nail polish which could mean that Taylor was used because she looked like her. If this is the case then the viewer will feel as betrayed as Taylor which places him as the bad guy.
  • When Taylor and the guy see each other, there is an immediate and clear facial expression change which causes them to both appear troubled. This gives him a spark of acceptance as the viewer sees how caught he his regardless of his real feelings. She purposefully can't look at him when the lyrics 'Just pretend' appear as it is a clear of reminder of when she had hope as opposed to the reality of the situation. It pains her too much and this becomes the basis of the black and white shots next which shows the life and colour bleeding out of her memories as she replaces them with something that will never happen.
  • Within this music video, throughout the piece there is an issue when it comes to representation in terms of ethnicity as the only ethnicity you see is people of the white race and other ethnic groups are not see what so ever. In addition to this, they were filming in what looked like Africa which is where the black race originate from therefore to not include someone of that race seemed somewhat strange. The person playing the main character is in fact Taylor swift herself so she’s acting as well as performing.

Poker Face - Lady Gaga

  • The 'Poker Face' video displays typical generic conventions found in Pop music videos, therefore fitting the Pop genre. The video involves Lady Gaga and backup dancers. Another conventions is Lady Gaga being the main focus in the video, as she is the main artist and is lip-synching.
  • The artist is filmed in several costumes and positions to help create a storyline.
  • Two visual elements suggest that it's a pop video are the danders and artist in the majority of the shots throughout the video.
  • The setting of the video is outside a modern mansion in America, thus fitting with the modern look the artists portrays. Setting the music video is based at is at a mansion which connotes to the audience that the artist is wealthy and extravagant. This fits with the song for Poker Face, the director took the literal meaning of the song title and instructed the artists and extras to play poker.
  • I think the setting does fit within the pop genre as it is about current trends in recent pop music videos its modernised with showing mansions and luxurious lifestyles.
  • The camera angles in the video can be seen as seductive and sexual and this is depicted through the different angles. When she sings the line "I'll get him hot, show him what I got" the camera is zooming in and out quickly and unsteady. This shot has been taken to get the audience to focus on her body and the movements she is showing on the chair can be seen as sexual. Which links to the representation of how women are viewed within the music industr
  • When Lady Gaga is walking through the blinds it is tracking shot, as the camera is trying to follow her. This establishes the scene but blocks the audience from following as the scene is showing that you cannot come in as she is hiding something. This highlights the idea of her having a 'poker face' as you can't tell what is happening.
  • The beaded curtains cut off the audience from entering the poker game. As you can see the back of her and you watch her go in, which conveys the idea that she wants privacy. This reflects intimacy of her and whatever is happening with the game. Blocking off the audience and cutting them off connotes the privacy of the players. This is a good represtnation within the video, as it can be seen as sexual and intimacy is a part of that. Also the curtain creates a distance between her and the audience.
  • The editing in the music video is to help match the graphics and actions to the song. In the establishing shots last gaga is getting out of the pool. These shots have quick edits and go along with the fast beat and pace of the song. The edits are also in time with the song as she say's "ma ma ma ma" the shots change each time. The quick edits highlight her weirdness; the robotic sounds match the movements of her body and how it has been edited.
  • The Mise-en-scene at the beginning of the music show that there are two Great Dane dogs either side of her. These dogs are known for being powerful, strong and biggest breed of the dog. This could represent her being powerful as she is walking in front of them and she is bigger, indicating that she is better than others. The dogs can also represent the men in the video, when the man leans back onto her he is darker than her and lower down, highlighting that she is better than him.
  • Lady Gagas' movements are provocative within he music video. Her actions can be seen as sexual as she is kissing a man and dancing with a range of people up close.
  • Due to the choice in Gaga’s extreme and unique costume choices, the audience is lead into a surreal music video environment. Some costumes for example have no relevance to the subject of the music video itself and so resort into a surreal sight for the viewer
Mark Roson -Bruno Mars - Uptown Funk

  • The video starts with a medium tracking shot of a woman’s feet, immediately grabbing the audiences attention. The music is introduced straight away building up tempo. This cuts to a slow motion shot of Bruno having a handshake with another person for a second until it cuts back to the original shot. The continuous shot reverse shot builds up the pace during the instrumental and excites the audience.
  • During this montage of clips we see Bruno is wearing a pink a pink tailored blazer and gold coloured accessories condoning wealth and power. Furthermore as the camera tilts up the females actresses body we see she is wearing a fur jacket which also suggests wealth as it is seen as a luxury item.
  • The shot transitions to a close up of Mark’s face through quick flashes which disorientated the audience. This effect acts like strobe lighting which we associate with night clubs or partying. Additionally Mark’s facial expression is very extreme and looks like he is screaming. The next shot is introduced through a wipe/sliding motion which takes us to a medium close up of Bruno and others. Bruno is positioned in the middle highlighting his important and is the centre of our focus.
  • There is an interesting portrayal of gender in the video. The emphasis is clearly on male camaraderie. The opening shots are close-up of hands shaking, slapping shoulders etc., all typically ‘male bonding’ behaviour. When the song starts properly, the dance routine does not focus solely on Mars, but rather shows him as a member of a team.
  • Despite the traditionally masculine nature of these sequences there are a number of amusing subversions. Mars seems to be mainly interested in himself (narcissism) rather than the passing women. He wears a pink jacket, goes to a women’s beauty salon to have his hair styled, and at one-point sings “I kiss myself/ I’m so pretty”. All of these subvert the male stereotypes of not caring about appearance, and of ‘beauty’ being a feminine obsession.
  • In terms of the Uses and Gratifications theory, the main gratification for audiences is likely to be entertainment. Elements such as the fast paced editing, the energetic performances and choreography, as well as the moments of humour are likely to engage and offer a sense of escapism to viewers. The popularity of the video, demonstrated by the vast number of views on YouTube, is likely to have generated discussion amongst fans, providing an element of social interaction.

  • One minute into the video, there is no female being facially identified, which promotes the idea that video is male dominant. The main focus is on their bodies as they walk in and out of the frame, this shows the male gaze as it stereotypically shows how men see women as objects.
  • The video remains very similar focusing on the dancing and singing with lots of camera twists and cuts to match the feeling of the music. At around two minutes we see our first location change to a hair salon where Bruno Mars and Mark have hair rollers in breaking the stereotype as hair rollers are normally associated with women. This also adds humour to the music video and makes it more enjoyable for the audience to watch. Bruno said in an interview that his video is very much inspired by the Minneapolis sound of 1980s funk music. The video does create a 80’s vibe reinforced through the costumes and props as we can see Mark is using an old fashion phone instead of an iPhone to create that illusion.

ROCK GENRE
Rock, also called rock and roll, rock & roll, or rock ’n’ roll, form of popular music that emerged in the 1950s. Rock music is a form of music with a strong beat, with simple tunes and a beat that is played or sung by a group of people with electric guitars and drums. The rock genre combines the elements of rhythm and blues, jazz and country music with addition of other electric instruments. There are 4 main characteristics that the rock genre must follow such as: The energy- rock offers surging and dynamic energy making the genre appealing to teenagers. Energetic Rhythms - written to a 4/4 time beat, this makes it easy to follow. Electric instruments and drum kits - Most rock bands play electric guitar, bass or dum kit - which can often be quite loud. A wide array of lyrical subjects - rock music allows for a wide range of lyrics content. Mise En Scene – Typically members of a rock band will wear black or dark coloured clothing with piercings and heavy eye makeup. Additionally rock music videos tend to have very low key lighting to create a dark atmosphere as this reflects the mood in the song.

Bon Jovi - Always

  • Bon Jovi are an American Rock band - their song Always, has a music video with the style of both narrative and performance.
  • The characters of the band are introduced and represented in a stereotypical way that a rock band would be. This is represented in a masculine way as the band are styled in jeans and vests/ or topless with scraggy hair and guitars. This was the general style in the 80s'-90s' as their body language is also represented in a provocative way. For example; the way their hair is blowing the room, this was done on purpose as the band attracted female attention.
  • The music video has a strong love story narrative and is portrayed through the use of different key elements. The beginning the video where he is laying on the bed thinking about the girl, then the music begins. This tells the audience that he is in love with the girl he is singing about. The way the actors behave towards each other is a major element which will affect the reality of love.
  • The music video is iconic to the rock genre in the way the band is dressed and the props and instruments they use in the video. The lead signer is stood holding an old-fashioned microphone wearing a black vest and jeans. Black is generally associated with rock bands as it represents there is danger and rebellion within them. Jeans are casual and were standard - simple clothing back when the video was made. Likewise the hair style is rugged and represented they don't care too much how they look and they are "trouble-makers"

  • The video starts with an establishing shot of a small town which is not recognisable - to then be curt away to show an old apartment where majority of the narrative is filmed within the music video, making the locations used very limited. Then later on during the video it cuts to another apartment which later gets set on fire. This is part of the Mise - en scene and setting strongly likes with the narrative which is being told because it suggests violence and anger.

  • Generally the mise-en scene during the music video now looks old as it was made in the late 90's. This is through the use of style, clothing and props. The music video plays non-diegetic sound throughout the whole video. This isn't interrupted by the narrative as all the videos are silent. Doing this makes it harder for the audience t understand what the song it about therefore make them think in order to understand the text.
  • The camera uses close ups during the performance section of the video, as this has been done to show the emotion on the face of the lead singer. It allows the audience to put the connection off the narrative and performance together to help get a feel of his anger and love loss.

Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
  • A music video usually gives one's song greater meaning and an easier way to understand what the music is about. The sounds, visuals, and the effects all contained in the music video and the music creates a unique experience that is its own. The artist can use symbols or references to make their music video, more relevant and deep. One of the sensational songs that uses the music video make the song greater is Bohemian Rhapsody.
  • There are six different parts in this song that is very different from each other. They all use a different musical style such as rock, ballad, or even opera. As the musical styles change, the visuals and the mood of the music video also change to fit the style that is being played.
  • The song opens with an acapella of a multi-track recordings of Freddie Mercury singing. In the music video, it shows all four members of the band in dim lighting lip syncing the lyrics. The lighting helps with the mood of the slow style of the song. Later in the song, Mercury’s head is more prominent to depict him as the main character of the song as he sings the main lyrics. The other members are shown to be singing the chorus in the background. The low-key lighting matches the characteristics of a rock genre as it gives off a bleak feelings, as well as the electric instalments shown throughout the video.
  • The light fades which cross-fades to a close up of Freddie Mercury. I think the use of this is to help keep the mystery the same for the band members. The use of post-production helps show which band member is the lead singer for the song.
  • The music video also includes shots of the band playing their electric instruments, this is a classic characteristics of the rock genre. This is something which is used in todays music videos, because it can make the fans want to go to their concerts.

Otherside- Red Hot Chill Peppers, Music videos
  • The music video is driven by the concept of an ex drug addict and his lifestyle now shown through an expression of German Art. The music video is showing the combination between both conceptual piece and a performance piece, as the band are very clearly shown to be performing with surreal instruments whilst also following a narrative. A reason for why we know the narrative is following an ex drug addict is because we get the feeling and sense of rehabitlation, he is trying to fight to get better.
  • Some of the words uses help with the connotation with the use of effects of prior drug
addiction are represented throughout this video and are portrayed through a very distinct Gothic style; for example, the demons that this recovered drug addict faces are symbolically represented through a demonic, twisted figure that emerges from the darkness, in an effort to convey the underlying message of the video whereby ex drug addicts suffer from relapses. The ladders also help convey this message as his is trying to get up again after another relaps and is trying to find a new way to get "sober".
  • There are various camera shots throughout establishing and reinforcing typical conventions associated with the rock genre, they may not be as obvious as other videos may perceive them. The directors for this music video attempted to recreate the conventions associated with the genre through unconventional methods such as the bass guitar and drums, whereby the instruments are represented through telephone wires (representing the guitars) and a clock face (representing the drums).

RnB Genre:
RnB is also known as Rhythm and Blues, it was developed in the 1940s. R&B mainly consists of Gospel, jazz, folk and traditional blues. There are 3 main characteristics in the R&B genre such as Keyboard-based instruments, incorporation of hiphop and smooth vocals. Locations usually vary from small bedrooms to very large houses. There is no set tone for the lighting in the RnB genre, however, they do use flashing lighting to give off the effect of intensity or calmness depending the mood - the lighting is reliant on the music.

No One - Alicia Keys
  • The music video begins with a close up of what a seems to be a self-playing instruments. This is the first motif of this interments as throughout the majority of the music videos, giving off the idea that it has an importance. Fades help link together all the videos, to give a delicate feel to the music video to help match the lyrics to the video.
  • The audience is initially introduced to the artist, who is sitting in the middle of a bland room, which has large windows which brings in a lot of natural lighting. This is quite typical of this genre, as it focuses the audience onto the artists which is very common n the R&B genre, which explains the simple and minimal use of Mise-en scene.
  • There are many medium close ups in the song as we focus on the artist and what she is signing, while long shots in between is used to show her figure, which is a selling point for female artists in the industry as it is common for them to appeal sexy to men. There is minimal make-up which is quite soft in order to continue the soothing theme of the song,
  • The establishing shots reveal to the audience that the video is bases around the idea of Alicia Keys being on different sets, a concept of this video as although she is in four different scenarios her love is still the same towards the person she is signing about.

  • There are many close-ups of the artists with her lips being centre screen, and her eyes staring down the camera makes the audience feel as if she is signing towards them. This encourages a relationship between the artist and the viewer, which is important in promoting her, as audiences will buy more music to get familiar with her.

  • The sets Mise-en scene has instruments, another reoccurring theme throughout the music video, which is associated with the sophisticated artist that is known as Alicia Keys. Her costumes in the chorus versus has been changed to a figure-hugging dress.
  • The camara pans across the room, pass a silhouette of people dancing, we are directed to Alicia Keys who is against a wall. A group of dancers in a music video is very typical as it helps to sell the song as it shows people enjoying the music, which unconsciously makes the listener enjoy the song since they are watching people have fun. The camera keeps switching between the two sets, which the pace of the edits and duration of the shots are at the same rate as the song
  • Soft lighting is shinning directly on the artist to make her stand out even in a crowded dark room. Low key lighting is used throughout to create an effect which accentuates Alicia Keys within the frame. The music video uses a lot of high angle shots, which is commonly used as she sings, which could create a meaning that the song is greater thinker. Shows the audience that, there is little power over female artists, creating a supportive attitude for her.
  • The final set in designed to be outside on a quiet street. To match the lyrics we can see that it is raining, the piano follows, which matches the theme throughout the video.
  • There are medium shots of her body throughout the video especially when she dances or moves. This is a common convection od R&B videos as the artist are known for the ways they present themselves and body image is also important for female artists.
  • To end the music video the camera zooms out to reveal the sets are contained in the self-playing piano.
Mariah Carey - We Belong Together
  • Audiences are introduced by a panning shot that is also a long shot to a big house in what looks like a rich area. This is typical of the R&B genre, as people are normally portrayed as having big houses/cars, therefore being successful is another example.
  • At first the audience is not sure who the artist is as we can only see her lower half, and when the silk drops down. The room is light, with no mise-en scene except for curtains. This is a typical location for R&B promotion video.
  • The director then introduced us to Mariah Carey, as she lies on a bed, with just covers covering her body. White is perhaps uses to represent purity or innocence despite the fact that she is naked.
  • The next room appears grand, continuing on with the theme, and there is minimal decoration.

  • The camera zooms into Mariah Carey who is sitting by her mirror as she sings and does her makeup. This is typical of how women are represented in r&b videos, opening their time on appearance. The mirror in particular could be used to show her lyrics as she is focusing on her reflection.
  • The next room comes across as grand, continuing the theme and the minimal decoration that is shown throughout the whole music video. In a lot of music videos for R&B majority of the videos follow the minimalistic look for some of their scenes.
  • We see a full shot of the artist sitting in centre screen. This is done to show her body, her legs and the long silk pink dress. Highlighting her femininity, her attractiveness which is a common theme that the lyrics of the song talks about.

  • As the narrative goes one, the audience get to see that she is getting married, however she is still signing the song. Most of the narrative is developed during the verses. A flashback is shown in black and white then justifies to the audience who she is singing about, as a rose is captured in the shot which symbolises love.
  • Throughout fades are used to link the long duration shots and are edited to the beat of the music. A dissolve is used to create a faint transition.

Rihanna - Umbrella

  • To start off the music video, we see a mid shot which establishes the main focus of the music video- which is Rihanna. She is in all black while creates a sense of mystery, the close up other leg and the fact the camera pans her body, shows the targeting audience is male as the director is sexualising the female, which is a classic characteristic of the R&B genre. The black clothing has connotation of power and authority, however the fact that she is in relaxing clothes defeats the purpose.
  • Her body language suggests she is rather dominant; the hat covers half her face alluding to this idea of mystery. The contrast in the dim, low key lighting and the pop of bright light on Rihanna contributes to this idea of her being the main focus as well as enhancing her superiority. This kind of lighting is commonly used in R&B videos.
  • Through various close up shots, we have the significance of costume and branding. In R&B videos, the audience is exposed to expensive clothing or technology. In this particular video it is mainly clothing. Within many R&B videos, women are always exposed; their body is always on show making them be objectified and degraded to sexual objects.

  • There is a long shot within the music video, which helps establish the artists power and dominance, through the use of special effects. The glass breaking shows the impact she has or is trying to make, thus contributing to this subversive archettype in a R&B video. IT is effective due to the time with the music, as it helps reinforce the narrative that she is in power.

  • The close up shots show her expressions and emotions; her smile indicates she is pleased with he authority she holds. Yet again, this goes against what is typically expected to be found in R&B music videos - women are generally objectified throughout by men.
  • The variety of camera angles accentuate her figure and the curves on her body, which arguably is used to entertain a male audience.

  • A black and white theme is used throughout the shots with flashes of white to help make the artist stand out. Rihanna being nude portrays that she is confident with her looks. Being nude in the video shows her dominance, which shows she is an independent that people can idolise and look up too. The editing show the strong lighting which helps make Rihanna stand out and contrasting the background.

Electric Dance Music Genre:

Electric dance music genre included music ranging from beatless calming ambient all the way to 200-beats-per-minute hardcore music, with house music, techno and drum and bass. There are 4 main characteristic for this music genre such as: the use of a Drum machine, Synthesiser, samples and loops and effects.

Wake me up -Avici

  • This music video strongly follows a narrative; the story is about two girls not belonging int heir home town. The older girl travels to find another town and finds that this is where they belong. The location of the music video is set in a rural area, through a certain part of the video the characters are shown to be in a club or a live concert.
  • The video has some relevance to the lyrics of the song. The first verse and chorus links the most with video when it mentions that 'I can't tell where the journey will end' which is similar to the situation of the two characters in the video. Near the end of the lyrics don't really match the video, reason being that the lyrics are slightly negative when the characters are cheerfully having fun.
  • In the beginning wide shots are used in the first two clips - very wide shot and a normal wide shot - this immediately sets the scene that the video will mostly take place in rural areas - the emptiness of the clips creates an enigma of the area being empty.
  • Lots of tracking shots are used in the scene where the two are walking in the town which lets us follow the action in the scene. Close-up's are combined with movement shots which shows how the characters are looking at the main protagonist in disgust, and with the use of the movement shots this creates a sense of realism that we are experiencing how the characters are feeling.

  • The editing was neither fast or slow, however, in a few clips there are slow motion shots which are used to create a dramatic effect. Filers are used to help enhance the visuals of this music video.

David Guetta feat Sia - Titanium

  • To start the video off we see a long shot os a young boy in the centre of the shot and all the surroundings are destroyed, hiding from the papers and lockers we can assume his location is a school. The shot moves backwards to reveal all the damage which has ben done, the boy is alone suggesting that he has caused to the disturbance. The shot focuses on him being the in the centre of the door, the outer walls appear larger as they closer to the camera.
  • The next "scene" shows the boy walling through the corridor, however the focus ids ran to the woman who is hiding behind the door who appears to be scared of the boy. The clearness and focus on the shot helps the audience establish her facial expression which is frightened.
  • When the beat drops in the music the shot in the camera speeds up the boy riding the bike, creating the illusion of him riding the bike as fast as if he is being chased. The camera jump cuts repeatedly showing different shots of the boy on the bike, zooming into the pedal, hands, his facial expressions. He is set to be in the centre of the shot from behind, this shot also gives a point of view as through your ere chasing him.
  • In the second verse of the song, the scene shows the boy, through a mid shot of his room and him throwing his teddy back behind him, this symbolises him throwing away his childhood, as his being chased and knows it is time to grow up. The shot cuts to the teddy laying on the bed, jumps to a shot of hum behind as the bear has been thrown away. The bedroom appears to be cold, there seems to be no family home suggesting the boy won't miss leaving home as he is used to being alone.
  • This is the first time we see the boy has superpowers, as he attempts to escapee through his back door and moves his keys by stretching out his hand and telepathically moving them. The shot shows a mid-shot od the keys physically lifting from the kitchen bench. The shot quickly jumps to police offers who have broken in the house as he escapes through the back door.
  • Here we see the sun setting behind some trees whilst the boy is running through some vandalised pieces of rocks. The sun setting in the background draws focus to the boy. Everything around him is vert still suggesting he is far from home. The cameras tarts to slowly move to the right, by now we can see the music video doesn't contain any images of the artist but rather a story.
  • Shortly afterwards, we see the boy has been caught and is surround by police the headlights of the two cars are focused on him. The camera shows a long-shot from behind one of the men. The boy is on all fours, showing the views of society, because the boy is different he is being chased and everyone is "humiliating" him.
  • The scene in the woods is something highly expected from thriller films, someone running through the wood with someone chasing them. The long shot of the boy curled up in a ball on the ground, instead of fighting the people around him he chooses to use his power to repel them away, the light becomes bright enough to spread the level into the air and knock the officers onto their backs, the camera fades into a plain background.
  • Andrew Goodwin's theory - the music video resembles a short-film. The young boy is different to everyone else and that is looked down in society. The lyrics link to the meaning of the song and video, however the don't tell the story. The lyrics do link with meaning such as "shoot me down, but I get up" and "shoot me down, but I won't fall, I am titanium" also linking to the common phrase, the young boy does not back down and is stronger than all the officers combined.
The Wanted - Walks Like Rihanna

  • The opening shot of the video are shots of a women walking. This woman is the subject of the song and the women has the walk that all the men like, appealing to the male gaze. The shots cut back and forth from her walking to showing the boys looking as if they are enjoying the walk. They seem shocked. This shows how boys enjoy looking at girls. The shot is shaping how the women is appealing to the guys and sets the tone for what the video will be about.

  • This shot is an example of a low angle wide shpt with a foreground out of focus. By using this shot it shows that the man is looking at the women leg in an interesting way. The angle is low which suggests he is observing her leg, creeping around it. The shot is a low angle to perhaps show the power of the band member, and how men are seen are more powerful than women.
  • This shot is of the band members not enjoying the women singing and dancing. It is a medium wide shot of them all holding their ears. This shot is effective for the narrative as it shows how they are not happy with her talent. It adds comedy to the video. The shot included the light which adds to a bad lighting flare onto the screen with correlates with her bad singing.
  • This videos has a lot of sexual close up shots. this is because the video is about looking at women and the message is a if a girl looks good then she is fine, no matter the talent or personality.
